SUBWAY SLEUTH V1.3 (SUBSL)
by Steve Herring (c)1991
BACKGROUND
SUBWAY SLEUTH is a game of underground transportation and above ground
crime detection. For younger players, there is some redeeming educational
value as the game uses logical problem solving skills and develops
familiarity with the alphabet.
As the "Subway Sleuth" you are a detective in a big city where the main
street is called Alphabet Avenue. It runs from A Street (Downtown) all
the way up to Z Street (Uptown). The busiest intersections are the streets
named after the vowels: A Street; E Street; I Street; O Street; U Street.
Also, the city's stores and services are located on streets with names
that match the first letter of their descriptions (the bank is on B Street,
the zoo is on Z Street, etc.).
The Alphabet Avenue Rapid Transit Line
A subway system runs under Alphabet Avenue with stations at all street
intersections. The five busiest streets (vowels) are EXPRESS stations,
while the other twenty-one streets (consonants) are LOCAL stations. If
you take a train marked LOCAL, it will stop at EVERY station, both LOCAL
and EXPRESS. If you take a train marked EXPRESS, it will stop only at the
five EXPRESS stations, by passing the others.
LOCAL trains go all the way from A Street to Z Street. EXPRESS trains go
from A Street to U Street. If you are riding DOWNTOWN, the end of the line
is A Street where you must get off. If you are riding UPTOWN, the end of
the line for LOCAL trains is Z Street, and the end of the line for EXPRESS
trains is U Street.
As a detective, you have found that the easiest way to get around the
city with its crowds, traffic jams, and impossible parking is by subway.
The police have given you a subway pass, so you don't have to worry about
fares. You take the subway to go one block or twenty-six blocks. A subway
map and city directory are available to help.
Crime Detection
In this game the crime is always the same but the solution is different
each time you play. A world famous precious gem has been stolen from the
museum on M Street. The thief has left behind a clue that will lead you
to other clues. Each clue hints at a different place in the city. Use the
city directory to find the most likely place, then take the subway to get
there. If you choose the correct place, you will find a new clue. Follow
the clues to the missing gem and receive a monetary reward based on how
quickly you were able to track it down. A record is kept of your ten best
cases.
REQUIREMENTS
Herringbone Software products are designed to be enjoyed in the most
basic environments. Using ASCII graphic symbols, it is not necessary
to have a graphics video card or monitor. Color is used, but the
software will work with many mono displays. If there are blank spaces
in the screens or the colors are strange, press M at the first screen
for a straight mono display. The programs may be run from a floppy disk,
but will run smoother if loaded to a hard disk.
Subway Sleuth uses a set of "data" files, so if a hard disk is used, it is
important to keep them all in one directory. The program will fail if it
cannot find all the files:
SUBSL.EXE SUBSL.MUS SUBSL.RID SUBSL.MAP
SUBSL.DOC SUBSL.STN SUBSL.BLD SUBSL.SET
SUBSL.TTL SUBSL.TRN SUBSL.STR
Change to the drive or directory where these files reside and enter
SUBSL to start the program.
GAME instructions
From what you have read above, you can probably start the game now and
understand quickly how the screens and menu work. But just for the record,
or for your reference if you have a question, here are the rules:
1. When you run this program you should see a test screen for color
or mono clarity. The default setting is for color, so if there are
any problems, press M at this screen for a simple mono display.
2. The next screen will be the title screen. Press any key to go to the
Whitestone Museum screen where the crime is described and the first clue
given. Press any key to go out to M Street.
3. The STREET screen is your home base. The current clue appears at the top
of the screen and a menu of selections appears at the bottom. (This
screen was designed with color characters, so mono displays will not
show as much detail.) From the menu you can:
Press U for UPTOWN
This takes you to the STATION screen for the UPTOWN side of the
avenue. The trains on this side go "up" the alphabet from A to Z.
Press D for DOWNTOWN
This takes you to the STATION screen for the DOWNTOWN side of the
avenue. The trains on this side go "down" the alphabet from Z to A.
Press M for MAP/CITY DIRECTORY
The map at the top shows you where you are and reminds you which
stops are EXPRESS and which are LOCAL. The City Directory shows
you the type of stores and services located on each street and
will help you solve your clues. Press any key to return to the
STREET.
Press S for SEARCH
If you have traveled to the correct street for the current clue,
when you SEARCH the building you will either get a new clue
or find the missing gem. If you are not on the correct street,
your SEARCH will give you a message that there are no new clues
there and you must keep sleuthing.
Press Q for QUIT
If you want to abandon the current game, QUIT will take you to the
case history screen where Q or E or [ESC] will end the program.
4. The STATION screen is where you catch the train to your next clue.
The platform sign tells you the direction of the trains stopping here
(UPTOWN/DOWNTOWN) and the type of trains that will stop (all trains
stop at EXPRESS stations; only LOCAL trains stop at LOCAL stations).
M Street is a LOCAL station, so EXPRESS trains will roar past. The
nearest EXPRESS station is O Street, two stops UPTOWN.
As with real life subway systems, you may not get the train you want
right away. Sometimes you will see the upper part of a train arriving
at the opposite platform. Be patient and remember the traffic jams
above.
5. When a train arrives that you want to take, press the ENTER (RETURN)
key to enter when the doors are open. If you do not want to board, just
wait for the train to pull out. You will not be allowed to enter if
the trains are arriving at the "end of the line" (e.g. you cannot
board a DOWNTOWN train at A Street).
6. When you board the train the RIDE screen is displayed. Window signs
remind you of the direction and type of train you are on. If you are
on an EXPRESS you will see LOCAL stations flying past the window.
When the train stops, press ENTER (RETURN) if you want to get off.
If you want to stay, just wait for the door to close.
If you arrive at an "end of the line" station, you are automatically
"kicked off" the train.
7. When you get off a train, you may be waiting for another train
(e.g. switching from LOCAL to EXPRESS), or you may want to go up to
the street level to search for a clue. Press the ESCAPE (ESC) key
to exit to the STREET.
8. When you find the gem, you are told how much time you took and what
the reward is. The more time you took, the smaller the reward. Anything
over ten minutes will be rewarded with only $10. Press any key to go to
the Case History screen. Your cases are ranked according to the
rewards you received, and your ten best are shown. From here you may
start another game (press S) or end the program (press Q or E or
[ESC] key).
NOTE: If you would like to clear out the case histories for another
player or to hide embarrassing scores, simply delete or remove
the file SUBSL.HST using DOS commands.
OBLIGATORY STERN REMARKS and HUMILIATING PLEA FOR MONEY
SUBWAY SLEUTH is shareware. It may be freely copied and distributed as long
as all files in the set listed above are included. As shareware it is
intended to be used only for evaluation. If you like it, and would like to
continue playing it without that nagging feeling of guilt, simply register
yourself as a user by sending a measly $8 to:

REGISTRATION BONUS
The evaluation version of Subway Sleuth is set to use three clues before
the gem is found. In some situations it may be helpful to modify this number.
If several players are sharing the game and each wants to participate by
solving one of the clues, it would be necessary to have as many clues as
players. Or smaller children may need the quick gratification of success
with only one clue. Registered owners will receive instructions for entering
a secret command that will set the number of clues from one to ten each time
the game is run.
